On August 25-27, the Base of Global Leadership Development (the Base) of the International Centre for Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO (ICEE) implemented a global leadership development program for expatriate managers in Montego Bay, Jamaica. SHEN Ye, Assistant to Secretary-General of ICEE and Secretary-General of ICEE’s Global Partnership Board, served as the program coordinator. Prof. WEI Jie, a famous Chinese economist, Prof. XUE Lei and Mr. CHEN Shengmin from the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University (Tsinghua SEM) were invited as guidance experts for the program. A total of 24 participants including the head of Human Resources Department, the leadership and department heads of America Division of China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), and its project leaders in countries like Guyana, Colombia, Peru, Jamaica, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Grenada had a three-day discussion and exchange.
The program focuses on the goal of cultivating the global competence of the CHEC’s international engineering talents, with the sessions such as classroom lectures, project sharing, group discussion, in-depth interviews and surveys. SHEN Ye introduced the program, including the purpose of the program and the arrangement of the content. Prof. WEI Jie analyzed the macroeconomic situation in the context of globalization. Prof. XUE Lei explored the company’s development strategy based on the concept of the history of global enterprise development. On the basis of one-on-one assessment, Prof. CHEN Shengmin analyzed the way to excellence in global leadership in detail. During the event, CHEC’s project leaders and employees in the offices in host countries shared their stories in the session of “My Story in Host Country”, introducing us the experience of Chinese enterprises in implementing projects. The four teachers also held a “Global Leadership Panel” with all participants from CHEC to explore the development of the company and individuals in the current international situation.

On August 27, CHEN Shengmin and SHEN Ye respectively held one-on-one interviews and symposiums with CHEC’s managers of regional branches, project leaders and heads of functional departments of regional branches on the cultivation of international talents in CHEC. This activity will lay a foundation to explore and establish a “Competency Model for International Expatriate Managers” with an international view on the common prosperity for mankind for CHEC’s expatriate management team, and to build and gradually put into practice CHEC’s exclusive and systematic “Global Leadership Talent Cultivation Program”, which is also an important content of cooperation and in-depth exploration of the Base.

Jointly established by ICEE and CHEC in 2021, the Base of Global Leadership Development of ICEE aims to promote engineering education and capacity building under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
