On December 1, 2025, the UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (ICEE) held a seminar on the “2025 Project for Strengthening International Mutual Recognition Organizations and Standards in Engineering Competency.” The seminar was attended by Wang Sunyu, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of ICEE; Tian Wei, Chief Engineer of the Overseas Company of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division; Yang Shuangtian, Deputy General Manager of China Construction Decoration Group; Zhang Zhuoqun, Senior Engineer from the UHV Department of State Grid Corporation of China; Qian Feng, Senior Engineer from the UHV Construction Branch of State Grid Corporation of China; Zhu Quanle, Senior Engineer at China Electric Power Research Institute; Liang Haifeng, Deputy Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering at North China Electric Power University; Yang Lei, faculty member of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong; and Wang Yujia, Project Head of the Secretariat of the Chinese Society of Engineers. The seminar was chaired by Qiao Weifeng and Xu Lihui, Assistant to Secretaries-General of ICEE and was conducted in a hybrid format combining online and offline participation.
To further enhance the scientific rigor and standardization of engineering competency assessment, ICEE has undertaken the China Association for Science and Technology’s “2025 Project for Strengthening International Mutual Recognition Organizations and Standards in Engineering Competency.” This seminar focused on the fields of supertall buildings and ultra-high-voltage (UHV) engineering, aiming to carry out the development of international engineer competency standards in these two areas, formulate a roadmap for drafting such standards, and provide reference approaches for promoting the practical application of engineering outcomes and the establishment of engineer competency standards.
The participating experts shared their professional insights, agreeing that the development of international mutual recognition organizations and standards should be grounded in China’s internationally leading position in these fields, using the country’s high technical standards and extensive engineering practice experience as a solid foundation for the evaluation system. They emphasized that the core of the standards should not be confined to traditional technical indicators alone, but should adopt a forward-looking perspective, highlighting engineers’ capacity for sustainable innovation and their practical ability to solve complex engineering problems.
Professor Wang Sunyu delivered the meeting summary. He expressed his gratitude to all participating experts for their valuable insights, noting that the research findings provide important references for promoting the alignment of China’s engineering standards with international practices and will offer strong support for enhancing the cultivation of engineering talent and China’s international competitiveness.Postdoctoral researchers
from ICEE, including Fu Jie, Tao Jinhu, Chang Xiaohan, and Tao Hongyi, also participated in the seminar.
