Liu Chang is a tenured Associate Professor/Special Research Fellow, Director of the Institute of Architectural History and Heritage Conservation at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, Curator of the Memorial Hall of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture, Director of the China Forbidden City Association, and Representative/Advisor for China Affairs at the WORLD MONUMENTS FUND. He has been responsible for 30 vertical and horizontal research projects and participated in 16 others, including major national social science fund projects such as “Research and Annotation of ‘Yingzao Fashi’” and Tsinghua University’s independent project “Case Studies on ‘Yingzao Fashi’ and Song, Liao, and Jin Architectural Works.” He has published 18 monographs, including “Predestined Serenity, Tranquil Longevity: the Conception, Craft and Conservation of the Qianlong Garden,” “A Comprehensive Explanation of the Carpentry of Ancient Timber Structures in Shanxi: Taiyuan Volume,” and “A Detailed Survey Report of the Wanfo Hall and Tianwang Hall at Zhenguo Temple in Pingyao, Shanxi.” He has also authored over 120 academic papers, such as “Algorithmic Gene: Two Examples of Bent Lower Eaves” and “Algorithmic Gene: A Comparative Study of the Scale Design of Three Timber Structures in Southeastern Shanxi.” Additionally, he has led and participated in conservation projects such as the Qianlong Garden in the Forbidden City and the conservation of the architecture and murals at Xialu Temple in Tibet.
